2009 NCAA Championships - Day 1

Hello-
For the first day of the meet, we had Anne Marie's 50 free and the women's 400 medley relay. Although this is one of the fastest swim meets, this is just like any other swim meets. There are some good swims and bad swims. Some are posting fast times while others are not going as fast as their entered time. Once the meet begins, the pressure is on and the atmosphere of the meet brings a lot of energy and tension.
For us, our first day didn't go as well as we planned, but we are in good spirit getting ready for tomorrow. We know why we are here and what we are here for. We just need to put the pieces together and have great swims tomorrow.

Anne Marie's 50 free: 22.13 (prelim-10th) 22.37 (final-15th) Earning All-American Honorable Mention

Women's 400 medley relay: Naomi Javanifard, Sara Nicponski, Erin Yamamoto, Anne Marie May 3:38.74 (19th) The video above is 25% faster than the actual swim.

From College Station, Texas

Hello everyone-
We got into College Station, Texas safely, and we are just gearing up for the NCAA Championships which begins tomorrow. The temperature is nice and warm just like our home, Santa Barbara, but it's not as beautiful as Santa Barbara. It's flat and no color around here (very much like pasta with cream sauce or pancake with sausage). The participants' gifts this year were a noice reduction (not cancelation) headphone that sounds fabulous and an universal mobile device case. Both have the cool looking NCAA Championship logo, and our swimmers were so excited. (note: Gregg and Eric need MP3 players ... anyone got old iPod that you want to donate???) Be in touch!

Race and interview video by Floswimming http://www.floswimming.org/videos/coverage/view/234361-husky-invite

If you are interested in watching races and interviews from the meet, you can visit the above link.
Last night, we started out with a school record in the women's 200 medley relay which ranked 7th at the end of last year.
NCAA B standard times were set by:
Women's 200 medley relay (Naomi Javanifard, Sara Nicponski, Erin Yamamoto, Anne Marie May)
Women's 100 breaststroke (Katy Freeman and Sara Nicponski)
Anne Marie missed a B standard by .01 second in the 100 breast and Erin Yamamoto missed a B standard by .07. However, those two went personal best times.

Husky Invite Day 1 Finals

How did the Gauchos do today? Here is one perspective from one of the team members.

I (Naya) mentioned that we are from Santa Barbara, and how Santa Barbara is known for great avocados. Great avocados are the ones that are juicy after peeling the skin.

Gaucho swimmers = Great avocados from Santa Barbara
Peeling = shaving

Some are rested and some others are tapered but everyone is shaved at this meet from our team.

The men's 200 free, women's 200 free, 400 medley relays and Anne Marie May's 50 freestyle were all NCAA B standard times.
School records were set in the omen's 200 free, 400 medley relays and the women's 50 freestyle today.
